CCBC Children's Center provides a high-quality, child-oriented, flexible education for preschool children. Features include:
Small groups, low staff/child ratio
The ratio is 1:3 for toddlers, 1:4 for two year olds, 1:8 for three year olds, and 1:10 for four and five year olds..
Sensitive, professional staff
Each class has two experienced teachers, as well as an aide for some part of each day. In addition, there are special resource teachers for music, art, and creative movement. We also work with a team of consultants to identify developmental differences early.
We believe children learn through play and through play they develop the strong foundation in social skills necessary for them to succeed both in kindergarten and in life. A developmentally appropriate curriculum is planned in order to enhance the development of the whole child--socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically.
Children who attend CCBC Children's Center learn to:
- Socialize and use language to express needs.
- Share and cooperate.
- Take turns listening and talking.
- Choose individual activities and participate in group activities.
- Help solve problems and make group decisions.
- Clean up and put things back where they belong.
- Create with basic materials: water, play dough, clay, magic markers, crayons, paints, scissors, and collage materials.
- Appreciate nature by caring for classroom pets, planting seeds, and taking trips outdoors.
- Understand the world around us: our bodies, our friends, people in the neighborhood, holidays we celebrate, food we eat, music and books, the outdoors, and other cultures
Older children take field trips to pick pumpkins, visit nature centers and gardens, see puppet shows and visit interesting places. Rescue squad members, doctors, dentists, musicians, and parents also visit the school to talk about their work. Each spring we organize a truck day featuring the large vehicles we see in our neighborhood.
CCBC is a parent-run school and we value parental involvement. Parents are always welcome to observe or participate in the Center’s programs. We appreciate parent’s thoughtful help in such areas as sharing cooking, music or craft activities with the children, implementing special projects, and participating on class trips. Other ways of being involved include serving on our Board of Directors, being a Room Parent, chairing or volunteering for our Auction or Book Fair (our only two fundraisers), or organizing our annual Truck Day. We also encourage parents to participate in our workday program. CCBC is not only a wonderful place for children, it’s also a wonderful place for parents.
CCBC Children's Center is nonprofit and nonsectarian. We accept children without regard to race, color, or national origin. Financial aid is available to qualified applicants.
We have nine classes grouped by age, accommodating 160 children aged 18 months to 5 years.
We offer a toddler program for one and two year olds, two or three mornings a week. Three year olds may attend two, three, or five mornings a week (eligibility determined by birthday and space availability). Four and five year olds attend five mornings a week.
